motleypixel.com has a great DIY macro lighting tutorial video up on youtube using a beer can, and some foam packaging and a milk jug. Not a bad idea to get the light diffused for Reverse Macro Lens Photography in a studio setting.  He shows some sample shots in the video between a flash, no flash and the diy flash and you can see the difference in the shadows.  Check you the video:
